Bubble tea (also known as boba tea)

Making bubble tea (also known as boba tea) at home is a fun and delicious treat! Here's a basic recipe for making this popular drink:

Ingredients

For the Tea

  • 2 cups strong black tea (or green tea)

  • 2-3 tablespoons sugar (to taste)

  • 1/2 cup milk or non-dairy milk (optional)

  • Ice cubes

For the Tapioca Pearls

  • 1 cup tapioca pearls (store-bought or homemade)

  • 4 cups water

  • 2-3 tablespoons sugar or honey (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Brew the Tea:

    • Brew 2 cups of strong tea by steeping tea bags or loose tea leaves in hot water. Add sugar to taste while the tea is hot. Let it cool, then refrigerate.

  2. Cook the Tapioca Pearls:

    • Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a large pot. Add the tapioca pearls and stir gently to prevent them from sticking together.

    • Reduce the heat to medium and cook the pearls for about 15 minutes, or until they become translucent and chewy. Stir occasionally.

    • Remove from heat, cover the pot, and let the pearls sit for another 15 minutes.

    • Drain the pearls and rinse them under cold water. Transfer them to a bowl and mix with sugar or honey to keep them from sticking together.

  3. Assemble the Bubble Tea:

    • In a large glass, add a generous amount of cooked tapioca pearls.

    • Pour the cooled tea over the pearls, leaving some space at the top.

    • Add milk or non-dairy milk if desired, and stir well.

    • Fill the glass with ice cubes and serve with a wide straw for the tapioca pearls.
