The People’s Democratic Party
For Immediate Release
May 3, 2007 – Based on official news from Viet Nam authorities, the trial of the founder and leading members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) including Dr. Le Nguyen Sang, Journalist Huynh Nguyen Dao, Lawyer Nguyen Bac Truyen is scheduled on May 10, 2007. The trial of Mr. Tran Quoc Hien, member of Block 8406 and spokesperson of The United Workers-Farmers Organization of Viet Nam follows on May 15, 2007. Both trials will take place at People’s Court in Sai Gon City .
The People’s Democratic Party was formed in Viet Nam in 2005. The party is aiming to nonviolently fight for human rights, freedom and democracy for Viet Nam . Members of the party have distributed and written articles to promote democracy on the internet as well in print inside Viet Nam . The party believes firmly that nonviolent democratic activities are legal, not in violation of any of Viet Nam ’s law. Party members were merely exercising their citizen’s rights which are stated clearly in Viet Nam ’s Constitution, article 69 to respecting “people’s rights of freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of forming associations”. However, Ha Noi authorities have arrested and continued to press charges against the PDP’s members in violation of the so called “article 88” Viet Nam ’s criminal law.
Also, Mr. Tran Quoc Hien, member of Block 8406 and spokesperson of the United Worker-Farmers Organization of Viet Nam (UWFO), is improperly charged with violating article 88, “disseminate against the state,” and article 89, “having activities to sabotage the state’s security.”
This is similar to the charges made against Father Nguyen Van Ly, the Lawyers Nguyen Van Dai and Le Thi Cong Nhan, and many other democratic and religious activists. Ha Noi authorities have ignored completely the people’s voices and rights. They continue to arrest and charge whoever dares to speak up with the same bogus and arbitrary accusations.
The People’s Democratic Party strongly protests Viet Nam ’s suppression on PDP’s members as well as other democratic and religious organizations and activists. Where there is injustice, there will be people struggling against it. The more improper persecutions and imprisonments of Vietnamese dissidents, the more the Viet Nam government shows to the world its true face - that of an inhumane totalitarian.
