Upon arriving in the United States, Tran faced the challenge of starting a new life. He had a background in food production and had worked in a garlic factory in Vietnam. Recognizing the lack of authentic Vietnamese chili sauces available in the United States, he saw an opportunity to fill that gap in the market.

In 1980, Tran started his own hot sauce company, initially named "Huy Fong Foods." He named it after the Taiwanese freighter that had carried him and his family to safety. Tran began producing his chili sauce, which he called "Sriracha," using a recipe inspired by the flavors of his homeland.

The distinctive rooster logo on the Huy Fong Sriracha bottles came from Tran's astrological sign, the rooster, and was meant to symbolize good fortune and luck. The green-capped bottle became iconic and easily recognizable on store shelves.

Despite facing initial challenges in marketing and distribution, Huy Fong Sriracha gained a cult following among Vietnamese and Southeast Asian communities in Southern California. Over time, the popularity of the sauce grew, thanks to word-of-mouth recommendations and its unique flavor profile.
